CoGo's Unsung Hero: North Hills' Will Huffmyer

The High School Sports Unsung Hero Award, presented by CoGo's, was created to recognize local student-athletes whose achievements go significantly beyond the athletic arena.

For North Hills senior-to-be Will Huffmyer, his achievements not only go beyond athletics, they are difficult to limit to any specific area.

Huffmyer, a three-year member of the Indians soccer team, is also front and center in the classroom, on the theater stage and in the orhestra pit.

In addition to playing for the North Hills soccer team, Huffmyer plays the sport year-round for the North Hills soccer club and North United FC. He maintains a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, the North Hills symphony and wind ensemble, and the Westinghouse Science Institute. As if that weren't enough, Will played Prince Charming in this spring's school presentation of Cinderella.

"To carry out his athletic responsibilities and academic coursework, Will gives generously of his valuable time, and often his work extended beyond the school day," said Dr. Kevin Deitrick, Director of Athletics at North Hills. "This was clearly demonstrated by Will as he is an active member of so many school activities including the play and the best buddies program."

The Unsung Hero Award is presented to local student athletes who have dedicated themselves to sports and academics, but traditionally have not received the deserved attention.

Criteria for selection is based on sportsmanship, scholastics, dedication to the sport and team members, success on the field, relationship with officials, school district personnel, the community, and current and former team members.

Huffmyer was presented the award last month at Martorelli Stadium at halftime of the North Hills-Shaler boys' lacrosse game.
