Uniontown battled Elizabeth Forward hard in the early going, but the Warriors proved to be too much for the Red Raiders and EF came away with a 42-6 win in the U.S. Steel Game of the Week.

The Warriors rode the legs of Steve Mayernik, who gained 215 yards and scored three touchdowns, to down visiting Uniontown 42-6.

With both teams coming out off of blowout losses at home, Uniontown (0-4) travels to Elizabeth Forward (2-2) this Friday night, as both teams look to bounce back.

“We just have to execute a lot better. There are some mistakes we’ve made since week one,” Elizabeth Forward head coach Mike LeDonne said. “We have to eliminate mental mistakes.”

Hollidaysburg running back Zach Kovash scored on a 2-yard plunge in overtime as the Golden Tigers won a defensive battle over host Belle Vernon.

Dual-threat quarterback Nico Law completed threw for 181 yards and junior running back Chacar Berry ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns as Ringgold topped Knoch 20-12 at Joe Montana Stadium Friday

The Ringgold Rams (1-1) were a lot of high school football fans’ trendy pick to win the Big Nine Conference coming into the season. But as has so often been the case, Thomas Jefferson had something to say about that, topping the Rams 49-6 in the season opener.

Ringgold got back on track last week, getting healthy against Uniontown in a 56-21 blowout.

McGuffey quarterback Nate Whipkey had a hand in five touchdowns as the Highlanders blanked host Charleroi 45-0 in an Interstate Conference game. Running back James Duchi added 236 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.

Whipkey was 6 of 11 passing for 153 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 88 yards and two more scores.

The Mon-Valley has put plenty of athletes on Division 1 football teams over the years, including several who made it to the NFL. There are a few Mon-Valley natives playing D-1 ball this season.

Tyler Boyd, Pitt, SO, WR, Clairton: Boyd broke freshman receiving records in the ACC and at Pitt last season, hauling in 85 receptions for 1,174 yards and 7 touchdowns.

The Charleroi Cougars are looking for their first win under new head coach Donnie Millitzer, who comes to the Cougars with high expectations for a team that finished 2-7 in 2013.

Millitzer, who coached a Gateway team that finished 8-3 and earned a spot in the WPIAL quarterfinals last season, is hoping for a similar record with his new team.

McKeesport rode junior running back Khaleke "Hit Man" Hudson to a romp over visiting Connellsville, as the 6-foot-0, 210-pounder rumbled for 340 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 36-7 rout.

Hudson, the Tigers leading returning rusher, scored on a 44-yard run to give his squad an early 7-0 lead.
