The ‪Pitt‬ defense held Akron to 110 total yards, Nate Peterman played the entire second half at quarterback and the Panthers beat Akron 24-7.

The Panthers almost tripled the Zips in total yards, 307-110, and held the ball for 37 minutes compared to 22 minutes for Akron. The Zips had just eight first downs while the Panthers had 21.

Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi announced Monday that junior running back James Conner, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee for a torn medial collateral ligament.

Conner (Erie, Pa./McDowell) sustained the injury during the second quarter of Pitt’s 45-37 win over Youngstown State.

Pitt football’s forgettable Paul Chryst era ended at 19-20 when the Madison native returned to Wisconsin to coach the Badgers, leaving the program in the same state of mediocrity in which he found it.

Former Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi is up next to try to do what Chryst couldn’t – make Pitt football matter nationally.

Training camps are open across the NFL and dozens of rookies are trying to buck the odds and earn a roster spot, including nearly two dozen with ties to western or central Pennsylvania.

Penn State and West Virginia each landed six players on NFL training camp rosters, while Pitt placed four and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference three.

The Steve Pederson era at Pitt is over. After the University of Pittsburgh’s athletic director position sat vacant for more than three months, Pitt plucked Scott Barnes from Utah State to replace Pederson.

Barnes takes over a solid department that for decades has never been able to rise above mediocrity. What needs to be done to get Pitt Athletics to that coveted “next level?”
